THE
KINGSGROVE COMMUNITY AID CENTRE’S ‘WELCOME WALL’ PROJECT
Through a grant, an opportunity arose to
create a ‘Welcome Wall’ at the Kingsgrove Community Aid Centre.
Pamela Hobbs, a volunteer Art teacher at
the Kingsgrove Community Aid Centre, in consultation with Brenda Eggleton,
Development Officer Aged &
Disability services Hurstville City Council, was asked to engage with the
community groups hosted at the Centre, to seek these groups representations and
contributions in the design and creation of this Welcome Wall.
The project’s design, created by Pamela,
was initially developed through the Senior’s Art Programme at the centre where
Pamela was the facilitator. Pamela’ s design concept for the wall was to recognize
the weaving of communications within the fabric of the Kingsgrove community.
Images of different woven baskets were used as the stimulus to represent this
concept of the community working together. All the community groups, who
accessed the centre, were eventually given the opportunity, under Pam’s
guidance, to craft their own unique response to the project’s concept.
Pamela Hobbs spent numerous hours, beyond
her allocated class times, collaborating with Brenda on the finer points of the
design, acquiring resources, researching glazing techniques and transporting
the finished tiles, which made up the creative heart of the wall, to Gymea TAFE
for firing.
The Welcome Wall was launched in April 2015.
